San Antonio, Texas, isn’t well known for its Jewish population, but the Jewish community has been a part of the city since just after the Texas Revolution. That community has only grown in the time since then, and so you shouldn’t be surprised that San Antonio has a large number of kosher restaurants today. You don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy the food at these places, so continue on to see some of the best options in the city.

Jerusalem Grill

You’ll find Jerusalem Grill at two locations on Wurzbach Road, and they have a third location on the North Loop. At all three locations, you’ll find they specialize in kosher and Mediterranean foods, including falafels, gyros, and kabobs. They have a long menu of Mediterranean favorites like stuffed grape leaves, dill rice, and grilled shawarma chicken, but make sure to check out the chef’s specialties. Jerusalem Grill also offers catering services, online ordering, and takeout.

Moche’s Golden Falafel

Moche’s Golden Falafel is an informal café you can find on McCullough Avenue, and as a café, it’s only open for breakfast and lunch. The ordering style is like Chipotle or Subway, so you start with your bread, choose your meat, choose your veggies, and then add a few extras. You can then add a few more extras at the sides and sauces table. As a result, you can get a very personalized Mediterranean meal, including a few vegetarian options. They also serve falafel on the side or in the pita that’s worth putting in the name.

Chicago Bagel and Deli

For a different kind of kosher meal, you should head to the Chicago Bagel and Deli on Wurzbach Road near Vance Jackson Road. The restaurant is family owned and operated with bagels made daily by the on-site baker. You can get your bagels as a sandwich, with cream cheese, or by the dozen. Bagels aren’t everything, though. They also offer sandwiches on rye and pita bread, challah, beef hot dogs, omelets and French toast for breakfast, and deli meats from companies like Boars Head and Hebrew National.

Max and Louie’s New York Diner

Max and Louie’s New York Diner is located right in the Embassy Oaks Shopping Center just off West Avenue. The owner named the place in honor of two of his older relatives, and in their honor he serves New York-style kosher diner meals like hot Reubens, chopped liver, and open roast beef sandwiches. You can pick up a hamburger (including with bacon, since not every visitor is kosher), enjoy a shake, or get something hard to drink. Max and Louie’s is open from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Thanks to San Antonio’s Jewish community, you won’t have any trouble finding a restaurant that serves kosher meals. With options like Mediterranean-Israeli restaurants and Jewish-American choices like Chicago bagels and New York deli sandwiches, you’ll understand why so many people look for kosher restaurants even if they don’t restrict their diet.
