4 Vehicle Air Conditioning Concerns You Should Never Ignore

Summer driving can be extremely uncomfortable without air conditioning. The problem with air conditioning in a car is that once it stops working, it can be very expensive to fix. Learning the problematic signs of a poorly working air conditioning unit can save you from costly repair fees and from an uncomfortable drive. Air Conditioning That Does Not Get Cold Your car's air conditioning should be cold enough to cool you down. If it is blowing air that is not cold, it could indicate a problem with the cooling unit. A few causes of warm air can include a Freon leak, a clogged tube, or a failed blower. There could also be a leak in the air conditioning hose. A minor leak that is caught early is often more affordable to fix. However, waiting too long can result in expensive repair fees. more Air That Starts Out Cold and Then Gets Warm Some drivers will notice cold air at first and then over time, the air gets warmer. This can be caused by an electrical problem, a clogged tube, or a blown fuse. Some cars have a temperature monitoring system that is similar to the thermostat in your home. The blower speeds and the temperature is determined by the set temperature and the current reading. If your air conditioning is intermittently cool, it is possible that the temperature gauge is not working properly. Sometimes, this requires replacing a sensor and other times, it requires the installation of a new climate control system. Air Conditioning That Smells Another common scenario is when the air conditioning is working properly but emits an odd smell. Air that smells is often caused by a dirty cabin filter or accumulated mold somewhere in the line or case. A smelly air conditioning unit can often be corrected by having the cabin filter replaced. It is important to take care of this problem as soon as possible. Your car's air conditioning unit is pumping air directly into the interior cabin and if there is mold or harmful contaminants in it, you are directly breathing those pollutants in. It is also possible to smell fuel when turning on the air conditioning. This often indicates a gas leak. A gas leak should be repaired immediately. Your auto mechanic will identify the location of the leak and then repair it which should immediately eliminate the fuel smell. A Sweet Air Conditioning Smell You might be wondering why sweet smelling air is problematic, but ignoring this smell can be very dangerous. A sweet smell coming from the air conditioning unit could indicate an antifreeze leak. Antifreeze contains harsh ingredients that can be toxic in large amounts. It is necessary to find the leak and to correct the problem as soon as possible. It is important to pay attention to your car's air conditioning. Identifying odd smells and problems can correct any mechanical problems before they get too expensive.
